Hiding keywords in HTML = bad practice

It is inadvisable to hide text on the HTML in the method previously used on aura.net. Google uses a clever algorithm and actually penalizes sites that try to trick it, placing keywords in hidden text is against search engine guidelines. A quick Google search for ‘hiding keywords in html’ will show many discussions regarding how Google ‘will get you’ and regards the practice as equivalent to ‘spamming’.

A better method would be to scrutinize your keywords and make sure that they are the most effective for your industry and location. Adding those keywords to your site’s meta tags is still the most effective practice. One of the best ways to really get tweak your SEO optimization is to spend some time in the Google Webmasters suite of tools. There are tests that you can run to compare search terms for their strength vs. their saturation. This means, if your keyword is ‘aura’ you will find that word is probably a more diluted search term compared to a more specific term like ‘Aura reading Los Angeles’.
